Doll and Her Doll
2023, fabric, soft pastels, polyester fill, wire and string, 50x10x8 cm and 23x5x3 cm
This work pushed me to engage with the idea of gendered performance in everyday life, and how this is reinforced in childhood. I investigated the purpose of dolls and how they are used through thinking back on my childhood. I remembered that I used to reenact everyday scenarios, such as my ballet classes with my dolls. Playing can be used to mirror personal experiences and allows you to watch yourself from an outside perspective. Perhaps this is a way of practicing how you present yourself, or how you should react in different scenarios. This type of play mirrors societal pressures to perfect performance of gender. I dressed the dolls in a ballet outfit as a symbol of the stereotypical ideal for women, the rigid standard for ballet dancers' bodies and meticulously crafted performances.
